The Position: Senior Buyer/Planner
The Sr. Buyer/Planner is a key role in the Supply Chain Dept. that is responsible for assuring inventory supply (which includes both planning and buying activities) to best meet global requirements across multiple distribution and sales channels. It is essential that this role has a keen understanding of the product/category market, sales seasonality, vendor capacity and reliability, and transit times in order to strike the optimal balance between high inventory availability and inventory risk / carrying costs.
The Sr. Buyer/Planner will execute purchasing and inventory management transactions including PO writing, delivery date and logistics tracking, system maintenance, product specification communication, Customer invoicing, accounts payable communication, and management of daily vendor activities. The Sr. Buyer/Planner will work as a liaison between Black Diamond Inc. and suppliers to support capacity planning and load balancing, especially when there are constraints or seasonality challenges. The role serves as main point of contact for Transfer Buying Team and Sales in regards to product availability.
As an experienced and senior position, the scope of work will primarily be larger, newer, highly complex, or difficult suppliers and supply chains that require an additional level of experience and attention to manage. The scope is across the BD Inc. family of brands.
In addition this role will contribute to refining internal purchasing processes, procedures and tools as well as being a key role in integration activities for new brands to the Black Diamond platform.
1. Supply Planning
a. Work with Product, Sourcing and Demand Planning teams to develop preliminary supply loading and completion plans given factory capacity, lead time, vendor reliability and safety stock levels as well as category seasonality and trends.
b. Advise Product, Sourcing and Demand Planning on known supply issues revolving around style and color MOQ’s.
c. Coordinate the integration of seasonal line and product changes for maximum inventory turns and minimal discontinued merchandise (DM).
d. Responsible for closely monitoring seasonal product literature, packaging and labeling changes to insure uninterrupted supply of most current promotional and packaging materials, in cooperation with Product Development and Marketing/Art department.
e. Given the appropriate conditions, plans the transition of responsibility from a centralized purchasing model to a more localized purchasing model with our Asia based purchasing team.
2. Execution
a. Authorized to act as an agent for Black Diamond Equipment in the purchase of finished goods in accordance with planning requirements, the highest ethical standards, and BD’s Quality System procedures.
b. Develops tools and systems that notifies of excess inventory (or potential excess) beyond the established horizon or OTB limit at a SKU level, whether at the PO execution stage or at stock holding level.
c. Authorized and responsible for maintaining purchasing & inventory systems with accurate delivery dates for open orders, justifying discrepancies and closing, changing or canceling purchase orders as required and in accordance with sales forecast, and reporting pertinent information to dept management.
d. Responsible for monitoring on time delivery rates, total fulfillment and other key vendor performance and purchasing metrics.
e. Monitor overall inventory position, projected DM position and proactively communicate any issues with management.
f. Assists in performing and troubleshooting day to day activities of the Purchasing and Supply Management Team.
g. Proactively partner with Transfer Buyers and Sales Teams to report product and material availability issues.
3. Process Documentation and Improvement
a. Responsible for working closely with the Global Supply Manager and staff to develop or improve purchasing and supply chain processes, systems and tools. This includes assisting with the standardization of supply practices at BDEA-Zhuhai as well integration of new acquisitions to the Black Diamond Platform.
b. Responsible to write and maintain detailed procedures for all key aspects of job and file in the designated location on the Black Diamond network.
c. Responsible for maintaining excellent vendor relationships (from an execution standpoint) with the goal of optimum quality, cooperation and trust between vendors and Black Diamond.
| | Qualifications: | Education Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Operations, Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain or related field.
Preferred: M.S. in any of the above areas.
Work Experience Required: 5+ years in a purchasing role utilizing an ERP platform and 3+ years experience in a forecast, capacity, production or supply planning environment.
Preferred: 5 years of the above experience specifically in planning, purchasing and inventory control.
| | Skills and General Experience: | • Excellent communication (verbal & written), organizational, analytical/problem-solving and administrative skills.
• Ability to understand and communicate with specific and diverse hierarchical/cultural audiences.
• Proven ability to multi-task, organize, schedule, and track information to and from various sources.
• Highly proficient with MS Office especially MS Excel and MS Power Point.
• Experienced with ERP / MRP tools such as Navision (preferred), SAP, Oracle or similar
• Ability to work cooperatively across multiple functions and within a team-based structure.
• Must have an excellent understanding of the upstream and downstream of the supply chain process.
• Demonstrates initiative, flexibility and provides complete follow through on areas of responsibility.
• Knowledge of climbing and skiing is helpful.
Alternative qualification: 5+ years of relevant purchasing, inventory control, and requirements planning may substitute for college degree.
